"Mark, you should be slapped for this negativity: 'But in today’s appallingly glutted and devolving/dissolving music scene no amount of cynicism, ambition, plotting, planning, and copying will put two middle-aged men anywhere near the charts. Unless we go completely behind the scenes and brilliantly “cast” songs for every hot performer we can think of, AND have financial angels and the exact, mad-luck connections to put us in a position to sell songs at that level.'

that's what we need to do. it can be done. "

Dave, your Zen slap has stuck with me ever since I read it. I'm going to try to "write-cast" some songs. If I succeeed in getting a song or songs out of this, I'd be honored to get opinions from everyone on whatever demos I come up with. Greg's playing and recording could then move a tune further towards no-brainer status for the performer(s) in question. I'm certainly open to collaborating, too, 'cuz such a song might start from a personal place but the act of "casting" it would make it not-personal.

The first fun thing to get from ya'll would be a list of performers that cut songs by other writers and seem suited to Slim-type songs (whatever that means). I'd like to try styles I haven't yet tried, as well. Smile

Another consideration would be any possible tiny connection someone might have that would get the song to the performer or their people. If none exists, I or we could just research it and take the unsolicited route.

Right now I'm working on oddball instrumentals to entertain myself so this would be a good way to get me back onto actual songs.

Anyway, like, whatever!

You're not talking about becoming Diane Warren, but I think this is the avenue we know the absolute least about. I couldn't get the autograph of any of the big, or even semi-big folks. I saw where George Benson said he had been putting off listening to submitted cassettes because he couldn't stand it, his manager forced him to, and the first cassette he put in had "20/20 Vision" on it. Happy days for George and that writer.

I'd guess the writer to artist ratio is like the lobbyist to congressman ratio in DC. How can we get somewhere unconnected? And 90% of the folks that might help us are thinking only of themselves.

I don't buy lotto tickets, but someone obviously wins, and lightning certainly does strike the earth. I'd be up for writing for somebody as an exercise in a second. But I would only be thinking about the Bee Gees writing "To Love Somebody" for Otis Redding...

Yeah, it's a dumb idea. I could be having fun making music that's interesting!

Wow, I actually inspired someone.

Yes, keep making interesting music. You don't have to dummy down to get a hit. We are used to thinking it's got to be stupid because most hits are stupid, but that's not a rule. Write your best stuff regardless, craft it, spend time on it, make it the best it can ACCORDING TO YOUR STANDARDS and no one elses. Then let's approach some stars. Still trying to get a hold of Casandra. I think she must busy LOL! But I'll get to her.... watch! Last time I saw her I told her I'd drink her bathwater, but I think that brought us closer. The real connection is Greg Bandy, the Mayor of Harlem I play with in Eddie's band.

But don't compromise what you're doing. It's the quality that will attract this crowd of folks.

An old trumpet player mentor of mine told me we don't want to be hot dogs; we want to be shrimp scampi (he thinks shrimp scampi is haute cuisine), but he got me to quit wearing jeans to the gig.
