I'll be assigning avatars since my control freak gene has been activated.

Just kidding. I made the specs 100x100 and 15kb max size. I FINALLY got a jpeg to upload. I must have been one pixel over the limit.

I saw some sites that provided avatars ask that folks not remotely link to them, so I disabled that feature.

I just guessed at the size of an avatar, so tell me if 15kb is too small.

I'm Slim but I advertise other people YAY

weird, I couldn't get Pshop to save a jpg that dimension to smaller than like 25k. It's the new Pshop and it must be flakey. Made it a gif and it was 9k. I'd make the limit 20k; that seems to be what others do.

I'll up the size. I ran into this headache at 18watt.com. Their default size was 80x80 and 6KB, and so was this forum's.

I couldn't get an 80x80 jpeg down to 6kb. It's reassuring you couldn't either.

I just wanted to post something so I became a "best friend" again Very Happy I started out as a "friend" and then I became a "best friend" and then a post got deleted and I went back to being a mere "friend" Crying or Very sad What's next, "bestest friend"? Perhaps after 100 posts, one turns into an "enemy" and so on. Hmmmm.

Is that as big as the avatar can be? They look a little small IMHO.

Also, the icons that indicate new post and no new post on the next to front page are both red. Maybe my monitor doesn't have the resolution to delineate between red and crimson Laughing

I'll be back.

Peter

Maybe 10 gets you to BFF, Best Friend Forever. I've been trying to come up with something interesting that will happen...

I upped the avatars to 120x120 and 25kb.

I saw all that redness there too and wondered about it. I'll keep checking into it.

By the time I get us a ranking icon, astrological sign, and a few other essentials we may be a few column lines deep on single line posts!!Very Happy

With God as my witness, on my browser, the forum is alternating between two layout designs. Shocked No kidding. Sometimes I see the scheme with the red new post icons you refer to, and other times, it's a format that's completely different. Once we settle on a color scheme and upload a logo, I'll delete any other format choices the site came with.

But then what would Gayle McCormick say? "You enlarged your avatar. It was small before. And yes, there are two red things when there should be one." I believe that's what she would say.

I never see anything but the Your Communities layout, which I like. I never see the phpBB layout or logo. I believe this is Gayle expressing her preference.

Apparently on the Ron Sexsmith forum a new poster was called "Loser" and after I think 300 posts you become a Ron Guru. Maybe we should give people something incredible to shoot for, like 100 posts makes them Chasm Supreme Attractive Space Fuehrer.

I have an early version of PS CS (Mac) and I can get my image (b/w) down to 120 x 120 pix but the file is still 49K odd. How do I strip Ks from it without losing the size?

I hope Mark sees your question. I cut down a jpg to approximately 80x80 and...

Saved as a jpg at 16.x million colors, it was 12kb
Save it off as a BMP, and it's 18kb
Saved it as a tif, and it's still 18kb.
Converted the tif from 16.x million colors to 256 custom colors, and it's 8kb.

MP3 and dither is a lot easier than this stuff. I guess try changing the number of colors. Is that "Any (number of) Colour(s) You Like"?

Pete, I still have Photoshop 6 at home so you're in good shape!

Make sure by checking under Image > Image Size that your image is 120 x 120 pixels at 72 ppi. I would first make a blank doc at those dimensions.

Then copy/paste your avatar pic into it, resizing to fit the 120 x 120 area as needed (using Command-T and moving the little "control corners" that appear -- when it's where you want, hit Return and it's done). Do that once and once only and your image will look its best. The more times you resize, the more it blurs.

And I'd avoid any sharpening since that makes it harder to compress.

Then choose File > Save For Web. Under Settings choose JPEG, and Maximum. Look at the lower left of the Save For Web window. It should show a resulting file size of under 10k. You can play with lower quality settings and see how small it gets before it looks like butt. Or try GIF at fewer and fewer colors. If it's a flat-color logo instead of a photo, it may reduce better and look cleaner as a 16 or 32 color GIF. Save it and upload.

After you save the JPEG you'll still have a file open with 2 layers, the background and the pic you pasted in. You can save this as a PSD if you want, or just not save it. You'll still have your JPEG.

I have a screen cap of Save To Web making my current avatar -- I will send to you if you want.

Thanks, slim,

I'll give it a go later on. For the time being, I used iPhoto which suits my limited mentality. Actually, it's quite clever. Has this ability to read my mind. I hope Jobs gets iWife happening soon. Very Happy
